This game scales back a lot of gameplay additions made in Super Bomberman 2 and returns to the classic formula. As for multiplayer, the game adds a lot over the previous game by adding more characters, each representing a country of Earth (including one of the villains, Pretty Bomber, as France, which marks her first appearance as a non-enemy character). There are also new cutscenes for the Story mode, which centers around the resurrection of The Fiendish Bombers who were previously defeated in Super Bomberman 2, as White and Black Bomberman adventure across various element themed stars in which the Five are causing havoc, under the rule of their creator, Bagular. Super Bomberman 3 is also the first game in the Super Bomberman series to feature Louies, which would become frequent in the next installments.

The overall animation graphics changed with the 3rd installment; unlike Super Bomberman 1 and 2, the 3rd sequel's graphics were simplified, which look similar to the graphics of the old PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 Bomberman games, and most of the music in the game are remixed versions of previous older Bomberman soundtracks.

Characters

  • White Bomberman – The hero of the series.
  • Black Bomberman – Once a rival, he helps Bomberman defeat the bad guys.
  • Rooeys – New to the series, in both the story and multiplayer modes, eggs can be found that hatch into the kangaroo-like creatures upon contact, with different special abilities and different colours:
    • The green Rooey can run from one end of the arena to the other until blocked.
    • The blue one has the ability to kick the bomb in an arc a distance away, much like the Power Mitt.
    • The brown one can lay the maximum number of bombs in a line in the direction faced.
    • The pink one can jump over the maximum of one block of wall or even a bomb blast, if timed correctly.
    • The yellow one has the power to kick one combustible wall a short distance away.
  • Magnet Bomber – A bad bomber that seemingly has an affinity for magnets. He guards the Green Bomber circuit of the natural Swamp Attack star, and, as in Super Bomberman 2, is the first to be defeated.
  • Golem Bomber – Large and powerful, this bomber likes explosions and fire. He guards the Red Bomber circuit of the fiery Volcanic star.
  • Pretty Bomber – The only female of the group, and the most human of them. She guards the Blue Bomber circuit of the oceanic Deep Sea star, and would later (although not shown in the game) switch sides to the good guys.
  • Brain Bomber – Implied to be the team's technician and all-around genius, he guards the Black Bomber circuit of the desert Pyramid star.
  • Plasma Bomber – The electrical leader of the Five Dastardly Bombers. He guards the White Bomber circuit in the frozen and snowy Winterland star, and seemingly forgot about his tries to make peace with Shirobon at the end of the previous game.
  • Bagular – The leader and creator of the Five Dastardly Bombers, he sits at the highest level of his Battleship, posed to destroy the stars in which the game takes place after Shirobon defeats all of his minions. When defeated in the first turn, he places himself inside a giant robot that is the fusion of all the Five Dastardly Bombers.

Battle Mode Characters

As stated, Super Bomberman 3's Battle Mode started a unique trend in which there are specific characters or types of characters to choose from. Unique to Super Bomberman 3, however, is that the various bombers represent various real-world countries. It is interesting to note that one of the game's villains, Pretty Bomber, appears in the battle mode (albeit with different sprites), which perhaps foreshadows its sequels' battle mode, that would bring all the villains (except Bagular) into the battlefield.
