Bomberman Portable (ボンバーマンポータブル), known simply as Bomberman outside Japan and Bomberman Legacy on the PS Store, is a handheld video game for the PSP and later released as downloadable on the PlayStation Store.

Controls[]

NOTE: This default controls setting is from the Japanese version, where the Circle and Cross button functions are swapped.

  • D-Pad: Move Bomberman around.
  • Circle: Set Bombs/Double tap to use Line Bomb.
  • Cross: Detonate Remote Bombs.
  • Triangle: Stop kicked Bombs.
  • Square: Set Item from your Inventory.
  • Start: Pause the game.
  • Select: Toggle between Item Inventory and Set Item interface.
  • L and R Shoulder: Scroll though the Item Inventory.

Normal Game (ノーマルゲーム)[]

This is the mode where the player has to help Bomberman fight off the shadowy threat of Professor Bagular. The game's rules are very similar to the DS version, and even borrowed some gameplay elements from it, like the Items Inventory system, the number of lives you can hold, and the maximum number of points. However, you no longer gain 1-Ups from points. Also in each World, there is a Key that spawn when a specific condition is met. You need 9 Keys in order to unlock the 10th and true final World. The 10th Key is only for unlocking the battle stage Searchlights.

Like usual, power-ups are found inside Soft Blocks. However, unlike the standard Bomberman games, they are not used directly, and they are instead stored into the inventory menu. The player can then decide to use them or conserve them for when they will most need them. The inventory is available before each stage, and also anytime during the levels (even accessible when the game is paused), but not during the boss fights.

Similar to Bomberman DS, there are also Bonus Stages that are available at the end of the 5th and 9th stages in each world (2nd Bonus Stage instead of a boss when you completed that world). The player is invincible and need to destroy Pontans under a time limit. The player will be rewarded by Power-ups when all of them have been destroyed. During the Bonus Stages, the menu to select the Power-ups cannot be accessed.

Normal Game Areas[]

  • Bomber World (ボンバーせい) is the first location. It is the most basic world and have no gimmick. The boss fight consists of four Mecha Bombers from Super Bomberman that have a different design.
  • Jungle World (グリーンウッドせい, Green Wood World) is the second location. This world's gimmick is leaf Pipes that conceals Bomberman, Bombs and enemies. The boss is Spiderer from Super Bomberman.
  • Desert World (イエローデザートせい, Yellow Desert World) is the third location. It introduces the Warp quicksand, and when the player steps on it, they will travel in another Warp quicksand on the course (with a few seconds of invincibility frame). The boss is Sorcery, which is an upgraded version of Tian Lung from Bomberman Max.
  • Spook World (ブラックホラーせい, Black Horror World) is the fourth location. The place is filled with ghost themed creatures. The gimmick is the lantern Soft Blocks, and that the more you destroy them, the less light appears in the stage. The boss is Bagular, fighting similar to his appearance in Super Bomberman 3, but with a new ability of summoning Gargoyles.
  • Ice World (ホワイトアイスせい, White Ice World) is the fifth location. It introduces the Icy Floors, that when Bomberman walk into them, he will slide to the direction he's facing, and cannot change direction until he hits an obstacle. The boss is Bigaron from Super Bomberman.
  • Lava World (レッドラバーせい, Red Lava World) is the sixth location. This features no Hard Blocks, but Holes that no one can pass, except flames. Some of the metal flooring will fall if Bomberman passes through them, resulting in a Hole. The falling floors can be identified in a keen look: their color and wire are lighter than the other tiles. The boss is Hades from Bomberman 64.
  • Electro World (ライトエレクトロせい, Light Electro World) is the seventh and the last of the initial levels. This world features an Electric Floor, that if Bomberman is standing or passing on them while electricity is occurring, he will be stunned for a few seconds. The boss is the Oven Range from Bomberman Max 2.
  • Mech World (グレーメカニカせい, Grey Mechanica World), the eighth world, will arise after clearing the first seven worlds. There are several areas in the battle field covered with a smooth metal. Stay away from them, as the presses will crush enemies, bombs and you alike. The boss is Bagular and an upgraded Bigaron.
  • Future World (ブルーチューンせい, Blue Tune World) is the ninth world, a city in space and Bagular's stronghold. There are pink Conveyor Belts here. The boss is Bagular and SkeleGuard, the latter from Super Bomberman 2.
  • Bagular's Spaceship (バグラーせんかん, Bagura Battleship) is the tenth and true final world unlocked if Bomberman found the Key in each of the previous worlds, otherwise the game will end after Future World with Bagular's escape. It is a crystalline landscape filled with alien technology and Magnetic Devices that occasionally attract Bombs if you place them too close to them. The final boss is Bagular and Robo Bomber, the latter bearing strong resemblance to its counterpart in Bomberman Party Edition.

Classic Game (クラシックゲーム)[]

Main article: Classic Mode

The game's concept is similar to the original Bomberman, but with updated graphics. Every 11th, 21st, 31st and 41st level will change the battle field. It is unlocked after finishing Normal Mode. There are a total of 50 levels in this mode. In this mode, unlike in Normal game, there is no inventory, and the power-ups are directly consumed when the player gathers them.

The fields are:

  • Classic: Same, but with grass covering the floor. Starts at Stage 1.
  • Food: The cheeses are Soft Blocks and cucumbers are Hard Blocks. Starts at Stage 11.
  • Lego-type theme: The single green/blue piece are Hard Blocks, and the colored units are Soft Blocks. Starts at Stage 21.
  • Garden theme: Flower containers are Soft Blocks, and hedges are Hard Blocks. Starts at Stage 31.
  • Water-area theme: The last. Treasure chests are Soft Blocks, and statues are Hard Blocks. Starts at Stage 41.

The eight classic enemies here are from the NES, while three others are completely new ones.

Battle Mode[]

Battle Mode can be played up to 4 players. You can play in multiplayer, or single player. Single player allows you to compete against 3 other COM enemies. You can set up everything, or customize it (like most other Bomberman games).

Here are some settings you can customize:

  • Matches - set up number of wins.
  • Time - set up limit. When the timer is 1 minute left, Pressure Blocks surround the area, crushing anyone and tidying the course.
  • Sudden Death - when the limit hits zero, every one present will die, ending up as a tie and/or draw. This is not allowed when there is infinite time.
  • Shuffle - allows you to set a starting position.
  • Skull - sets up whether Skulls are burnable or not. If not burnable, the way to get rid of it is by collecting it, despite the illness.
  • Revenge- an eliminated player rides the Bad Bomber and throws bombs 2 to 3 units away. If set to Super, the eliminated player can go back to gameplay by successfully eliminating another player with their own bomb.

Difficulty/Players

  • Number of players - Determine the number of players (1 to 4) - Human, COM or Off.
  • COM difficulty - 3 levels: Weak, Normal, Strong.

Arenas[]

  • Standard - the classic arena.
  • Standard Jr. - the classic mini arena.
  • Power Trip - items disabled, but built in MAX firepower, 3 Speed and 3 Bombs.
  • Items Galore - no item customizing and no Hard Blocks, but Soft Blocks surrounding a pile of items.
  • Power Trip Jr. - mini, but same criteria in Power Trip.
  • Piping Hot - go through pipes. There may be surprises in there, like a bomb.
  • Boom Factory - regular arena, but with two conveyor belts.
  • Bomb Benders - kicked bombs move to the direction indicated by arrows.
  • Pipes & Belts - combination of Piping Hot and Boom Factory. Unlocked after finishing Classic Mode.
  • Boom Senders - kicked bombs and flames move through under the pipes.
  • Slip & Bang - players can only move the direction they choose, so they can't change direction unless they are stopped on a wall or Hard Block.
  • On Thin Ice - the ice floor can melt if the bomb above it explodes.
  • Steam Stepper - geysers can lower the players' vision.
  • Igloo Madness - bombs set on igloos have a MAX firepower, regardless of current firepower.
  • Searchlights - battle in darkness with the aid of searchlights. Unlocked after gathering the key in 10-5.
  • Blow Me Down - fans can turn off bombs temporarily, along with making it harder to walk. Unlocked after finishing Normal Mode.
  • Speed Freak - everyone's speed is 8, the MAX limit.
  • Crazy Bomb Benders - similar to Bomb Benders, but some arrows change the bombs' direction.
  • Totally Warped - warp quicksands moves the players to another warp quicksand.
  • On Holey Ground - players can't cross the gaps, but they allow the fire explosions to cross.
  • Random - the arenas can change level to level.

Items[]

These items are found in the game. Some are exclusive to Normal Mode and Classic, while some others are exclusive to Battle Mode. In Normal Mode, The player can stock up to 99 of each item, and they need to be used from the inventory.

Trivia[]

  • Bomber World is the only world that does not have an exclusive feature.
    • Jungle World features trees that acts like tunnels.
    • Desert World features quicksand that warps the player to another place.
    • Spook World features a game field that eventually darkens overtime.
    • Ice World features slippery floors.
    • Lava World features holes and falling tiles.
    • Electro World features stunning tiles.
    • Mech World features tiles that are constantly squashed by presses.
    • Future World features conveyor belts.
    • Bagular's Battleship features magnets that pulls bombs toward them.
  • The Food level of Classic Mode has green-topped red Onils that resemble seedless strawberries.
    • Likewise, Dorias (orange) and Balloms (green) have alternate-color versions that are worth more points.
  • "On Holey Ground" is a play on the term "Holy Ground".
  • Planet Bomber's grass is darker than the Standard Arena and Levels 1 to 10 of Classic Mode.
  • While Bomberman Portable has its own OST, it also prominently utilizes various tracks from three past titles, being either remixed or reused with no alteration. Most of the Normal Mode music is remixed from Bomberman Online (DC). The themes for Stage Select, Electro World, Desert World, Bagular's final battle, and the World Select screen are reused from Bomberman World, and Bomber World's theme is reused from Net de Bomberman. This makes it one of the only entries in the franchise to feature a wide variety of returning tracks from past games to date, alongside its OST. In addition, the various tracks it features from Bomberman Online utilize the mix from their appearance in Net de Bomberman, with the only difference being that the prominent echo in the Net de Bomberman mixes have been removed.
  • All of Normal Mode's bosses return from various previous titles in the franchise.
