Bomberman '94 Special Version (Japanese: ボンバーマン'94体験版, Bonbāman '94 Taikenhan) is a limited edition demo version of Bomberman '94 released on the PC Engine game console only in Japan in 1993.

Only 10,000 physical copies of this pre-release title were ever produced, and were given away exclusively through Hudson Soft's newsletter and at one of the Hudson Soft Summer Caravan events.

The game is also featured as a playable demo in PC Engine Hyper Catalogue 4, as well as in PC Engine Hyper Catalog Duo RX CD2.

Product Differences[]

  • The retail version of Bomberman '94 was released on the standard TurboChip (HuCard) format, whereas Special Version was released on Super CD-ROM².
  • Special Version features a disclaimer screen, which said, at the time of this demo's release, that because of circumstances beyond Hudson Soft's control, the release of the final game could not be disclosed, along with a "Coming Soon" message.
  • Special Version reuses music from Bomberman '93.
  • Special Version has a different title screen, which featured White Bomberman kicking a bomb, Black Bomberman running up behind, Green Bomberman with a fearful look, Red Bomberman holding a bomb, and Blue Bomberman desperately clutching to a Rooi Egg. The logo also has a different color scheme, along with a bomb replacing the "o" in "Bomberman". The "'94" in the logo also changes colors.
  • Unlike the finalized version, Special Version only features the Battle Game. Speaking of which, it only featured the Bombermen in their regular forms, so players cannot use their alternate forms. In addition, only the Europe map is available, along with the game using coins to signify victories instead of trophies. One more thing; the option to play against computer-controlled opponents is not present.
  • For aesthetic differences, the menu graphics are different, along with a lighter color palette. Also, the Victory screen is also different, with the stage not having the detail seen on the final version along with the "VICTORY!!" sign being colored red. It's the same thing with the Draw Game screen, with the sign reading "DRAW GAME" being less detailed.

Cheat Code[]

There is a cheat code that could only be performed on the Super CD-ROM² boot-up screen that changes the title screen of the game from English to Japanese. The cheat is done by holding left on the controller's directional pad, and then pushing the Run button.
